ESiWACE3 CoE - Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe

Hackathon in June (24-26) 2024 at the Netherlands eScience Center (Amsterdam)

The event is targeted at weather and climate modellers at all career stages. The participants will bring their own codes to the hackathon and work in teams, together with HPC experts, to improve the performance of their code. This will be the second of four ESiWACE3 hackathons, and the goal of this event is to assist climate scientists with optimising earth-system models (ESMs).

In the context of the optimisation and tuning of ESMs, the focus of this hackathon is on:

  • Porting of code to Graphics Processing Units (GPUs)
  • Performance portability on different architectures
  • Use of auto-tuning for performance optimisation or energy-efficiency
  • Application of mixed-precision programming techniques

Please be aware that this list is not exhaustive, and feel free to apply even if your idea is not explicitly mentioned in this list.

This will be an on-site event at the Netherlands eScience Center (in Amsterdam) with no possibility of remote participation.

Who can apply?

The applicant's institution needs to be located in one of the countries participating in the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking or belong to the list of Inclusiveness Target Countries.

We especially encourage groups with early career scientists and female researchers to apply.

We are looking for proposals outlining a team effort. It might involve, for example, porting your code to GPUs or using Kernel Tuner to optimise the performance of your application. The scope should be limited so that good progress can be made during the hackathon with your team of typically two (2) to four (4) people. Please clearly define what you want to achieve and give your ideas about how you might do it. There will be plenty of expert help in HPC available at the hackathon, but within your team you will need to have a good understanding of your own application and to have prepared carefully.

Please note that we strongly prefer open-source applications.

How to apply and notifications

The application form is available here.

The applications will be evaluated on their technical and scientific merits, clarity of purpose and level of commitment by experts in the ESiWACE3 consortium.

There will be two application deadlines:

  • Early application deadline: 03/05/2024
  • Late application deadline:  24/05/2024
  • Early notifications by: 24/05/2024
  • Late notifications by: 14/06/2024

Looking forward to seeing you in Amsterdam!
